How To Lead Your Team Through Change

Change is often inevitable when changes are made under new management, mergers, hostile takeovers or acquisitions. Change can be disruptive. Some people adapt well to change – some tolerate it – while others dislike it and try to ignore it or hide their heads in the sand. The announcement that changes are going to take place is the easy part; it makes your organization look bold and forward-thinking. However, implementing those changes is complicated because no matter the reasons for making those changes, there will always be resentment and resistance, especially when the changes require a new way of working or painful budget cuts.

‘Every change forces all companies in an industry to adapt their strategies to that change.” – Bill Gates.

We adopt a particular style – a particular way of behaving at a very young age which heavily influences how we react to change. Having everyone on your team score a DISC Behavioural Assessment may give you valuable insight into how each team member might react to those changes. You can use that understanding to make the transition smoother and help lead your team through change.

Here are some general characteristics of each DISC style based on Dr. William Marston’s research.

D – Dominant. They may resist change if it threatens their authority and might become aggressive and demanding when faced with uncertainty. To help D cope with change, provide clear direction and feedback and recognize their ability to lead others.

I – Interpersonal. They may resist change if it disrupts their relationships or routines and may become emotional and opinionated when faced with stress or conflict. To help I cope with change, provide support and empathy and address their concerns.

S – Steadiness. They may resist change if it challenges their logic and security and may become cautious and rigid and resist new ideas for fear of failure. To help S cope with change, explain the reasons behind those changes and how they will benefit them and the team, and offer your support.

C – Conscientious. They may resist change if it goes against their standards and values and may become pessimistic and distant when faced with failure or disappointment. To help C cope with change, acknowledge the difficulties and offer guidance and resources.

‘Your success in life isn’t based on your ability to simply change. It is based on your ability to change faster than your competition, customers and business.’ – Mark Sanborn.

Remember, these are just general tendencies; not everyone on your team will fit into one neat little package. We are a blend of all four DISC styles and may react differently depending on the situation. The best way to lead your team through change is to be open-minded, flexible and communicative and understand how each person handles change.

On Your Mark – Get Ready – Set – Now Go

2016 - 3It’s that time of year again when we look back on the year that was and direct our attention to the year ahead. Instead of making resolutions the way you’ve always done – try something different this year. Write down 3 action words that will help you focus on your goals. Every action you take this year should be a reflection of what you want to accomplish. If they aren’t – then don’t do it. Resolutions won’t work unless you do. Your life is a planned event. Put a plan together and then work your plan.

Once you decide what you want to accomplish, you need to develop the how. Last year I wanted to improve my golf swing so I took some golf lessons and managed to take 15 strokes off my average score. I wanted to spend more time with my family and friends so I took some vacation time – rare for me because I’m a workaholic. The last thing I wanted to accomplish in 2015 was to expand my circle of influence so I spent one hour a day developing and executing a social media strategy on Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and Google +. I accomplished all 3 in 2015 because I had a game plan and stuck to my plan.

My action words for 2016 are Health, Speaking and Finance. What 3 things would you like to accomplish in 2016? What 3 action words will help you stay focused and accomplish those 3 things that are most important to you? What 3 action words will give you the best return on your time investment? You only have 168 hours in the course of a week. No more or no less. Those who accomplish the things in life that are most important to them have learned to invest their time wisely. Spending your precious time on things that won’t get you closer to accomplishing your goals in 2016 is a total waste of your time. Any time is the right time to start a new beginning. On your mark – get ready – set – now go!!! – Make 2016 your best year yet.

Things Won’t Get Better Until You Do

secret 4Life – your life is not about finding yourself. It’s about creating yourself. It’s about learning how to live the life you imagined for yourself. Are you happy being you? Would you rather be doing something else then what you are doing right now? The only person who can change your current situation is you. If you’re waiting for someone else to come along to improve your lot in life you are going to be waiting a very, very long time. Miracles are great, but they are so hard to come by. Wishing and hoping won’t make it so. Life, your life, is a planned event.

What is getting in the way of you accomplishing those things that seem to be out of your reach? What skills will it take for you to realize your full potential? I believe we are born a certain style which influences how we communicate and interact with others, how we manage our time and deal with stress. And how we solve problems and resolve conflict. I also believe we aren’t born knowing what we need to know to accomplish those things that are most important to us. But I also believe we have the capacity to learn how. When you change the habit you change the result. All you have to do is stop doing one thing and start doing another. And if you do it often enough – it will become you.

You can learn to manage your time more effectively, cope with the daily stressors in your life and deal with difficult people and challenging situations better. The only person getting in your way of accomplishing those things that are most important to you – is you. You just need to learn how to get out of your own way. It starts with you believing in you. It starts with you believing you can. Once you believe in yourself the rest will fall into line. I know I’m making this sound pretty simple. But it really is. We just make it seem impossible. If you can dream it you can do it. Success and being successful is a learned behaviour. It’s time you got busy and start doing what needs to be done. Nothing will get better until you do.

The Secret to Success is Between Your Ears 1

secret 3Think it, act it and eventually you’ll become it. The secret to your success is between your ears. However, just thinking about success isn’t good enough. You actually have to go out and apply yourself. That’s the difference between successful people and the not so successful people. Successful people work at it. Successful people get up off the couch and get after it. Successful people hit the ground running.

What would you rather be doing with your life then what you are doing right now? I want you to think about that for a moment. What does the ideal career look like to you? If you wanted to start your own small business, what kind of business would it be? If you want to take on a leadership position in your organization, what role would that be? Life – your life – is a planned event – wishing hoping won’t make it so. Put a plan together and then work your plan.

Good habits = good results. We are adults and we can develop new habits. What new habits will you need to develop to open your own small business? What new habits will you need to learn to get promoted? I know it’s easier said then done – but it can be done. Do you need to learn how to be more patient, open-minded or a better communicator and listener? Will you need to be better at planning and managing your time more effectively?

When you change the habit – you change the result. All you need to do is just stop doing one thing and start doing another. And once you’ve done it often enough it will become you. You will have developed a new habit. Once you’ve made up your mind what it is you want, and how to go about getting it, eventually everything will fall into place.
